How to Overcome Kaal Sarp Dosh?

According to the Puranas, Ketu was the son of the great sage Kashyapa. The gods and the demons were busy churning the ocean to obtain wealth and prosperity. But can auspicious and inauspicious forces truly coexist in harmony? Their friendship broke immediately after the nectar of immortality was obtained. Deceit and trickery are natural tendencies of the demons—especially when the promise of immortality is at stake.

Thus, the demon Ketu, disguised among the gods, attempted to drink the nectar. But fate intervened. Ketu was caught by the Sun and the Moon. When the truth came out, Lord Vishnu cut off Ketu’s head with the Sudarshan Chakra. However, Ketu had already consumed a small amount of the nectar, and therefore even after being decapitated, he remained immortal.

The body of the demon became known as Ketu, and the severed head became known as Rahu in the planetary system.

Kaal Sarp Yoga is created due to the positional influence of Rahu and Ketu. Before discussing this in detail, let us understand the nature and qualities of Rahu and Ketu as described in the Vedas, Puranas, and Jyotish Shastra.

According to folklore, Rahu is a shadow, and in mathematics it is referred to as the “Chandrapaat.” But the Puranas contain many legends about Rahu and Ketu. Rishis like Parashara, Vedavyasa, and Jaimini have given them the status of planets. Vedavyasa even composed unique hymns and salutations for Rahu and Ketu. Their influence in astrological predictions is undeniable—no calculation in horoscopic astrology can be made without considering Rahu and Ketu.

Rahu is stronger than all malefic planets. Being pitch black, Rahu symbolizes the essence of night. The word tama signifies deep darkness—representing a night filled with sin and ignorance. Thus, one of Rahu’s names is Tama.

Even so, Rahu is a giver of material wealth and grandeur. In many horoscopes, a strong Rahu makes a person wealthy and powerful. But Rahu is a malefic planet; therefore, it does not grant liberation. Rahu is extremely materialistic, skeptical, and irreligious, making people worldly, materialistic, or even atheistic.

According to astrology, Rahu causes destruction on Earth. It creates uncontrollable desires, endless cravings, and intense sensual longing. Even at the height of indulgence, Rahu leaves one dissatisfied. Rahu has only one motion—retrograde. It constantly tries to swim in the ocean of desires through the human senses. According to the scriptures, Rahu is a Chandala planet—indiscriminate, devoid of compassion, kindness, or forgiveness, fearless and shameless, skillful in theft, deception, fraud, trickery, artistry, and acting.

Depending on its position, Rahu can grant rapid and astonishing success, immense wealth, money, bravery, and power. Yet, it also brings temptations of wine and women, a tendency for brokerage, and deceit. Ultimately, Rahu makes one drown in the sea of sorrow created by their own actions.

On the other hand, Ketu is a mysterious planet. It is spiritual. With Ketu’s help, human spiritual consciousness grows—almost attaining divine proximity. Ketu has no eyes, and therefore it casts no planetary aspect. Ketu is considered a spiritual planet. It helps seekers through detachment, renunciation, and solitary meditation. It cuts worldly attachments and pulls one toward liberation. That is why Sage Jaimini said, “Ketau kebalam”—Ketu alone grants liberation.

Depending on its position, Ketu helps one progress toward liberation. When afflicted, it brings directionless wandering and a cursed, unhappy life.

What is Kaal Sarp Dosh?

Kala is the ultimate power that creates and destroys. In the womb of Time (Kala), all creation dissolves into eternal sleep. This dissolution is known as Srishti-Laya. The serpent-form of Time is called Kaal Sarp, symbolizing destruction. Hence, the term Kaal Sarp itself is fear-inducing.
Modern astrologers have greatly emphasised the importance of this yoga, and its negative effects are widely known.

This yoga is caused by Rahu and Ketu and creates obstacles in every aspect of life—health, family matters, marriage, children, employment, promotions, business, professional life, home environment, friendships, workplace—everything.
If all seven planets (from Sun to Saturn) are positioned on one side of Rahu or Ketu, Kaal Sarp Dosh is formed.

According to another belief, if six planets lie on one side of Rahu and Ketu and one planet lies on the other, partial Kaal Sarp Yoga is formed, and this is considered even more harmful.

What is the Path to Liberation from Kaal Sarp Dosh?

Kaal Sarp Dosh creates severe obstacles in a person’s path to success. Fame, respect, popularity, honor, spiritual attainment—all face constant hindrance due to this yoga.

However, remedies are needed only if Rahu and Ketu are positioned inauspiciously in the birth chart. Otherwise, its significance is often exaggerated.

For peace and well-being, one may perform Kaal Sarp Dosh remedies as needed. With self-confidence and devotion to God, one should perform Shiva Jal-Abhishek daily so that no obstacle can rise. According to Tantric methods, using a properly sanctified Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran Kavach can also bring auspicious results.
